Every day is Rides Wristband Day at Again at BCYF
(Berrien Springs, MI) A staple at the Berrien County Youth Fair has always been "Rides
Wristband Days" during fair week, where on certain days and times fair goers can ride
the rides unlimited for one price. Again this year, "every day will be Rides Wristband
Day," says Fair Manager, Lana Stover-Henderson.
Wade Shows rides personnel oversee the rides at the fair each summer, and partnered
with the fair last year to make each day a wristband day. Lana said, "The response was
overwhelming last year. We sold about six times as many wristbands as the year before
because it is such a good deal." Lana commented that fairgoers enjoyed the rides
wristbands because they can be used throughout the day instead of a restricted time
period, "which makes everybody happy because the prices are affordable and the times
are flexible." She also said the lines are not as long because everyone is not trying to get
on the rides at the same time.
Tickets will have two price levels: Monday through Thursday prices will be $17 each,
while Friday and Saturday prices will be $20 each. A special sale promotion on rides
wristbands will take place from now through August 6 where the price will be $13 per
wristband at Honor Credit Union locations. This saves riders $4 per wristband if they use
it Monday through Thursday, or it will save them $7 per wristband if they use it on
Friday or Saturday. Lana said, "We are excited to partner with Honor Credit Union on
this promotion to offer the discounted wristbands to people all over the county. That
saves fair goers money and makes it affordable for families. Buy as many as you want to
use throughout the week!" The fair's theme this year is "A Treasure Chest of the
County's Best" and Lana said, "Kids always have fun memories of the rides from the
fair."
Wristband vouchers will be available at all Honor Credit Union locations, as well as the
BCYF office, and on-line at bcyf.org. beginning July 1. Riders will receive a wristband
voucher to be used on any one day during the fair. The vouchers are exchanged for a
wristband at the fair in the rides area. Fair dates are August 16-21. For more

BCYF Fish Fry Fundraiser Announced
(Berrien Springs, MI) When the Berrien County Youth Fair lost their state funding for youth exhibitor premium money last year, the not-for-profit group didn’t let that stop them. A Fish Fry Fundraiser was organized, and an overwhelming 800+ came out for fish to support the youth of Berrien County. They even ran out of fish. The concept was so popular, that the organization decided to do it again this year on Friday, July 23 for the 2nd Annual BCYF Fish Fry.
BCYF Board Member and Fish Fry Committee Chair, Mark Young, said they won’t run out of fish this year. "Last Year we were overwhelmed with
the support of our local community to help the youth exhibitors of Berrien County. We had no idea so many would come to the dinner! This year
we are going to be loaded for bear and have enough fish to feed all of you who want to come out and support us again."
More committee members have been added and the event will now include a silent auction, with all proceeds going towards the youth premium fund. The Board of Directors is working to create packages for bidding. There are already donations of Veterinary Services, a family four-pack of Disney World park hopper passes, NASCAR tickets and autographed merchandise, and even a load of cut, split, and delivered firewood. Even with last year’s fundraiser, the BCYF Board of Directors had to reduce the amount of premiums for the exhibitors, as the poor weather during fair week added to their bottom line deficit.
Young said, "The goal of this event is to raise as much money as possible to reward the efforts of the youth of
Berrien County and the hard work they put into the thousands of exhibits showcased at the Fair each year."
Last year there were 2,647 youth exhibitors showing over 14,500 exhibits.
The committee is still in need of supply donations for the event with fish being the biggest need. Individuals and companies interested in contributing time, supplies, or donation items for the silent auction, please contact the Fair Office at 269-473-4251.
Tickets to the Fish Fry are $10 and include fish, sides, dessert, and a drink. Carryout will be available.

Ironworkers Lend a Hand to BCYF Swine Project
(Berrien Springs, MI) -The Berrien County Youth Fair Swine Committee is busy assembling panels for their swine pen project, getting 96 new steel and galvanized pens ready for the August 16-21 fair. The Swine Pen Project, supported by the BCYF Board, is a partnership with the South Bend Ironworkers Local 292 Apprentice Program. The undertaking is funded through donations by the Ironworkers; Builder’s Ironworks; Niles Chemical and Paint; Miller Welding; ATT Witt Galvenizing; the Upton Foundation; the Hanson Family Foundation; and many other community businesses and individuals.
BCYF Swine Committee members have been working since October to design pens and raise money to replace 46 pens in the Swine Barn, which will then house an additional 192 pigs. Total pig capacity will be grow from 288 to 339 for fair week. A separate barn will support tack for the youth exhibitors. Previously, part of this tack barn had included add-on pens for swine exhibitors that were never intended to be permanent, but funding kept the fair board from replacing the temporary units, and a need for more pens grew. The new layout in Swine Barn provides for more pens, a greater number of aisles, better flow through the barn and safe housing.
BCYF Swine Project Chairperson, Gaye Blind, contacted the South Bend Ironworkers Local 292 and worked out a deal that benefited everyone. If the fair could provide the materials through fundraising, then the apprentices could get practice by making the swine pens, and at no charge to the fair. Blind said, “This project is really coming together with the work of so many people, whether they are building the pens, asking for donations, or spreading the word about this project that is so meaningful to the BCYF swine exhibitors and their families.”
Community support is welcome, and the first $5,000 will be matched with grants from the Upton Foundation and the Hanson Family Foundation. The Blue Ribbon donation program is posted on the fair’s website at www.bcyf.org where potential donors can find out more information and fill out a donation form.

It was determined the lower glass portion of the doors to both restrooms were smashed out allowing entrance by the suspect(s) who ignited materials found in each restroom.
The restrooms were under construction at the time of the incident, damage to the restrooms is extensive, no dollar estimate at this time.
Anyone with information is encouraged to call Detective Easton at 983-2571, 983-3608 or the anonymous tip line, 985-0301.

BCYF Looking for Performers
(Berrien Springs, MI) The Berrien County Youth Fair is looking for volunteer performers for the Al Barbott Memorial Stage at this summer’s fair, August 16-21. Committee Chairperson, Mark Young, said, “We already have about 75% of our schedule filled, but we are looking for both some daytime and evening acts to complete the schedule.” Young said his committee is looking for acts of all kinds, whether they are soloists, bands, singers, or other types of performers. Already booked for this year include the ‘10-Minute Warm Up Band,’ island music from the band ‘Waverland,’ and the polka band ‘The Streudelmeisters’ to name a few.
The Al Barbott Memorial Stage was donated by the Barbott family two years ago, and then PA and lighting equipment were donated by the AEP Cook Nuclear Plant ‘Heart of Cook’ grant last year. The stage is located outdoors in the “mall” area of the fairgrounds, surrounded by concessionaires, benches, and picnic tables for fairgoers to rest, eat, and take in some free entertainment.
The goal of the committee is to have at least five acts per day on the stage. Clown judging and youth award ceremonies also take place on the stage. Other events scheduled so far include a Tae Kwon Doe demonstration, a quintet, a 30-person chorus, a Christian band, a string ensemble, cheerleading and dance performances, a pipe and drum demonstration, a country act, and the popular Frozen T-Shirt Contest.
Individuals or bands interested in performing at the fair need to send in a CD with sample music and a promotional packet with contact information by May 17 to:

BERRIEN SPRINGS MI - The proposed Expo Arena at the Berrien County Youth Fair moved closer to its planned groundbreaking when it
received a $150,000 gift from The American Electric Power (AEP) Foundation at the monthly meeting of the Berrien County Youth Fair
(BCYF) Association Monday night.
"Thanks to the philanthropy of The American Electric Power Foundation, the Expo Arena project at the BCYF is becoming a reality,"
said Bruce Foster, the Chairman and President of the Berrien County Youth Fair Association board. "This is our first major gift and we are expecting
many more in the weeks ahead as we approach our ground-breaking after this year's BCYF in August."
The American Electric Power Foundation is funded by American Electric Power and its utility operating units.
The Foundation provides a permanent, ongoing resource for charitable initiatives involving higher dollar values and multi-year commitments
in the communities served by AEP and initiatives outside of AEP's 11-state service area.
The BCYF board announced plans for the Expo Arena last year. When completed, the Expo Arena will offer a year-round,
climate controlled facility for equestrian events, circuses, rodeos, farm shows, boat and auto shows, home and garden shows,
mid-sized conventions, concerts and other family fare.
The proposed Expo Arena will cover 6.1 acres under one roof and will include a 500-stall stable and indoor warm-up ring,
a 4,000-seat main arena, and a hospitality center that will feature a 14,000 square foot all-purpose banquet room with a full
service kitchen and a cafeteria.
Barry Visel, Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) Community Relations Manager, believes the Expo Arena will serve as a catalyst for
the economic development of Berrien County.
"We see the Expo Arena at the Berrien County Youth Fair as a key factor in the future development of central Berrien
County and the adjacent communities that AEP serves," Visel explained. "As our region emerges from the economic recession,
this project will help create badly needed jobs and bring in new revenue to the region. We at I&M are delighted that
The AEP Foundation is the first organization to step up and help out the Expo Arena fundraising endeavor."
Joe Jensen, Chief Nuclear Officer and Senior Vice President at AEP's Cook Nuclear Plant, and also an avid horseman, called the Expo Arena a
facility the people of this area can view with pride.
"Not only will it showcase the talent and accomplishments of young people," Jensen said, "it will also provide enhanced
opportunities to help with youth education, 4-H initiatives and strengthen civic partnerships."
Jack Strayer, Director of Development and Marketing for the Expo Arena, reported to the Fair board that there are $3.5 million
in pledges and cash at the present time. Strayer added that his goal is to raise $5 million by the tentative August groundbreaking date
of Aug. 21, 2010. The anticipated completion date of the Expo Arena is the spring of 2012.
For additional information about AEP, please contact Marta Elliott, I&M Corporate Communications, at 547-236-4965.

BCYF Offers Free Open House for First Time Youth Exhibitors
(Berrien Springs, MI) All of your questions about being a Berrien County Youth Fair exhibitor can be answered on Thursday, May 6 when the fair offers a First Time Youth Exhibitor’s open house. Fair secretary and entry office chairperson, Karen Klug, said
"We don’t want anyone to feel intimidated or overwhelmed about entering an exhibit at the fair, so we're offering this open house to walk
kids and their parents through the process. We are excited to offer this fifth annual open house."
The open house is a free event, held at the Berrien County Youth Fair in the Youth Memorial building on May 6 beginning at 6:30 p.m. A short orientation kicks off the program with information on where to get exhibitor handbooks and entry forms, their deadlines, and how to fill out entry forms and entry tags. Fair Manager, Lana Stover-Henderson, said "Participants will learn about documentation entry requirements that may be necessary, such as registration papers, identification numbers, and health regulations. Each animal species is different, and superintendents for each animal building will be on hand to answer specific questions."
Office Coordinator, Gail Holmes, said "Community members want to know how and where to purchase animals, and whether you need to be
in a 4-H club to exhibit (you don't!), and this open house will be able to answer those questions and hopefully get even more kids involved."
Some benefits of being an exhibitor include receiving a free week-long pass to the fair, possibly winning ribbons and prize money, and creating lifelong memories and a sense of pride.
The open house will focus not only on animal exhibits, but will also have information regarding still exhibits in floral, horticulture, home economics, and crafts. Entry day procedures will be explained, and future exhibit clinics for many divisions will be announced at the open house.
If you would like to attend the open house, please RSVP by phone at 269-473-4251 or by e-mail at bcyf@bcyf.org. Important registration deadlines to know include: June 1 large animals; July 1 small animals; August 1 still exhibits.
In an effort to both save money and to be more environmentally friendly, exhibitor handbooks are available on-line only at www.bcyf.org beginning May 1. The Fair Office and all public libraries in Berrien County also have copies on reserve to view. Entry forms are available on-line, at the libraries, and the fair office. Youths age 5-20 can exhibit stills. Youths 6-20 can exhibit animals, and five-year olds can show in several animal classes, but not all. Age is determined as of January first. League of Women Voters
On Thursday, May 6 at 7:00 pm the League of Women Voters of Berrien and Cass Counties will present a panel discussion on Detroit: Toward a Sustainable Future. Come to Chikaming Township Center, 13535 Red Arrow Highway in Harbert for this free public meeting on the present and future of Michigan’s largest city.
This meeting could also be called reintroducing SE Michigan to SW Michigan. We tend to think of Detroit as if it were in a foreign country. Detroit is part of Michigan’s problem, and, therefore, our problem, but at one time Detroit was the economic engine of the state--and it could be again. Right now there might be a chance for Detroit to change course, thanks to the new mayor, the support of numerous civic groups and foundations, the willingness of some to think outside the box and the focus of Time magazine on Detroit. Or perhaps the hole is too deep and the slope too steep.
The panelists include Marge Sorge, Director of the Detroit Regional News Hub. Marge knows everything that is going on. Kat Owsley is the Director of One D, a leader of a number of civic groups supporting the new effort. Mike Score, is the CEO of Hantz Farms. John Hantz plans to take tracts of abandoned city land and farm it. Mike Score is the guy who is going to make that happen and he’ll tell us how. Bettie Buss, Senior Researcher for the independent Citizens Research Council, is the author of the report just released April 5 on The Fiscal Condition of the City of Detroit. It is hard to escape the financial realities.
These four panelists will all be traveling from Detroit for this meeting-- the League hopes you will be able to make it too. For more information go to lwvbcc.org.
New Fair Manager Named
(Berrien Springs, MI) The Board of Directors of the Berrien County Youth Fair is pleased to announce that Lana Stover-Henderson has been hired as the fair manager effective April 15, 2010. Previous fair manager, Chris Carlin retired on January 31, 2010 and Pam Hirsch, past BCYF president, has served as interim fair manager since Carlin’s retirement.

During her service career, Stover-Henderson has successfully managed people and events throughout the world. Her most recent assignment before retirement from the USAF was at the Pentagon as the Deputy Chief of the Executive Services Human Resources Division.
Stover-Henderson and her husband, Howard, chose to make Berrien Springs their home in 2007.

"Learn the richness of solitude and quiet. That ‘still small voice’is yearning to be heard." Susan Jeffers
It’s amazing to believe that another busy summer is passing before our eyes! Whatever happened to the lazy hazy summer days of our youth? Taking time out to enjoy the moment is something we all have to work on and paying attention to ourselves is usually the last thing on our “to-do” list. The above quote from Susan Jeffers reminds us that we must listen to our inner voice (intuition) and recognize that we really do deserve an occasional break in the action. A little hiatus of sorts, in order to rest, relax and renew our souls.
